How the BROM measures Rotation and Lateral Flexion: The compass on the BROM R/L unit measures to the magnetic reference placed on a selected spine location, thus eliminating unwanted movement below that point. An added advantage of this method is that measurements are made with the trunk in the vertical position. The BROM R/L unit is designed so when the examiner grasps the rib cage the unit becomes an integral part of the patient, thus eliminating tracking errors.
How the BROM Basic measures Flexion and Extension: The BROM Basic includes two Universal Inclinometers for measuring Flexion and Extension of the spine, as well as range of motion of the extremities. The Universal Inclinometers are fluid damped to permit fast, accurate readings without waiting for oscillations to damp out. The Universal Inclinometer has two unique bases. The rubber-footed base is ideally suited for measuring curved surfaces, such as the spine, without slipping. The examiner places an inclinometer on the lower and upper measuring point (i.e. S1 and T12 for lumbar flexion) and zeros the meters. The readings on the meters are read and recorded when the patient has reached end range. The difference between the two readings is true flexion.
